SOLO TOURISM AS AN EMERGING TREND IN THE TOURISM ECONOMY

Background and motivation. Globally, it is observed that solo tourism is gaining momentum, especially in the context of loneliness and changes in the demographic profile of people. Postponement of marriage, the desire for freedom, the increase in the number of people living separately from others and the ability to explore new environments favor the development of a new segment of customers in the tourism market. Interest in the preferences of solitary people has determined the need to approach this topic of solo travel from an economic and social perspective.
Research objectives. This study aims to reflect aspects related to the conceptual delimitation of solitary tourism, motivational factors for solo travelers, the evolution of tourism indicators, safety during travel, costs and other aspects related to inequality and stigma.
Methodology. The paper includes qualitative analysis, represented by the consumption characteristics of solo travelers attached to certain groups, strengthening certainties with the help of digital technologies used during trips. Open access statistical indicators presented in studies of organizations, but also of entities specialized in such research, allow understanding the dimension and prospects of the economy in the conditions of solitary tourism. At the same time, establishing the characteristics of solitary tourism is a methodological premise for future research.
Results. The purpose of this study is to present the architecture of solo tourism, the issues of security and high costs. An important aspect of the solution offered by digital technologies, used from the planning stage to the end of the trip. Also, the ability of economic agents in the industry to adapt to the realities of solo tourism will strengthen the capacity of the tourism economy to withstand the challenges of this fragile sector.
The contribution of the paper. This research presents new trends in the tourism economy, the profile of the solitary tourist, challenges faced by solitary tourists and digital technologies as a means of sustainable assistance. In the same context, additional directions for research on solitary tourism are projected.
